Why is the new book by Dr. Lisa McNary of such interest?
We've had a lot of interest in this new book, with its very unique message and format. This thought-provoking story illustrates what ought to occur in organizational changes. But reality rarely follows theory, and research suggests that the majority of change programs are tweaked beyond recognition or abandoned within two years. The primary reason is purely cultural. As this fictional company tries to solve a complex problem with hastily applied Quality Management and Six Sigma tools, most readers will find something that resonates.

Her book, Quality and Six Sigma from the Inside Out, is required reading. Dr. McNary has taken the proceeds from sales of her book and established the "Deming Management Memorial Award" in the university's college of Business. Recipients are required to have senior standing, a 3.4 cumulative GPA, and be active in campus activities. The Excecutive Committee of the college makes the selection each year.
The recipient of the Deming Management Memorial Award is James Adam Cochran, and he is truly a deserving winner. He told Dr. McNary that he "thinks all the time about how to control chart various things." Later, in a letter of thanks for the award, he stated that in all the awards he's won over the years, he is most proud of this one, and that he would like to pursue a career in the field of statistics and quality.
Dr. McNary also combines National Poetry Month with a chance for students to submit poems related to their class work. Tools of the Trade was the winer this year. Kudos to Lisa for being such a creative teacher!

Tired of creating tool zombies with little to show for it? Not getting the results you expected from Six Sigma? Try Practical Process Improvement! The objective of PPI is to increase profit and organizational effectiveness by improving customer satisfaction, quality, and productivity, all while reducing costs. It is based on three principles:
Ed Zunich has developed a very powerful program that is being successfully used throughout a huge multinational corporation. This book describes its philosophy, background, principles, and practical applications. Managers and employees at all levels will find the book informative and easy to read, and the methods simple and effective. PPI replaces complex programs with a straightforward method - one that works.
182 pages. Paperback. $25.00Traditional textbooks fail to provide an overall approach for the analysis of data, while typical training classes focus on techniques without telling you how to choose between those techniques for a particular analysis. This book is the remedy for both of these problems. Here, the various techniques are organized according to the type of analysis problem, making it easy to select an appropriate analysis technique. Moreover, this is the first text to integrate the techniques of SPC with the traditional techniques of statistical inference. By placing these various analysis techniques side by side and using them on the same data sets, the reader can see how to gain the maximum insight with the least effort.
